Her groom is then dispatched to find her in a rowboat, but he discovers her murdered and propped against a tree. Her veil and ring are missing. Various suspects seem possible, including a young couple who form a society to prevent the killing of a flock of cormorants that next next to the lake, and a fisherman whom the couple suspects of being the birds killer. Jule, the young woman suspect has a history of violence and a past sentence for murder as a minor. Zeiler finds her fathers life jacket in a collection of items retrieved from the lake and preserved by Majas mother in remembrance of Majas twin brother, who was drowned as an infant during a storm. The fisherman, Meinert, dies when Oberlander visits his house. He fires his shotgun at the wall, and the recoil apparently causes him to tumble backwards down a flight of stairs and a broken neck. Items found in his house eventually point towards the reason for Majas murder and the actual killer. Oberlander reconciles with Kim .
