An unusual feature of this release by the saxophone-and-piano duo of Joseph Lulloff and Yu-Lien The is that all of the music is newly commissioned, and all of the composers involved had training at the University of Michigan (where neither of the players teaches). It is hard to hear the presence of a "Michigan school," however, beyond perhaps a general orientation toward accessibility; the works on the album have a substantial and attractive diversity. There is a good deal of really idiomatic writing for the saxophone, impressive in that this is an instrument with which few classical composers are familiar. Hear the title work by Dorothy Chang, whose opening movement features remarkable shades of saxophone tone in long-held notes. Several works relate to the composers' sense of their own histories, Chang's of her Chinese ancestry, David Biedenbender's of his upbringing in Detroit in the solo-saxophone Detroit Steel. It is not indicated that Stacy Garrop's Tantrum grew from experiences in child-rearing, but perhaps that is the case; the three-movement work is hugely enjoyable. The album concludes with Carter Pann's Sonata for alto saxophone and piano, a work that has hints of jazz; Lulloff is also an expert in this idiom and adjusts beautifully throughout to the shifting musical languages. Enjoyable for anyone, this release is essential for lovers of contemporary wind music.
